So what do the reenactors of Company D, 7th Tennessee and their families eat during our weekend events? Hard tack cooked in bacon fat?
Well, if you want it, we could probably cook it up for you! Our meals are well-planned out and there is always plenty for everyone.
150 years ago the soldiers of the 7th Tennessee, like much of the rest of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, suffered through continual shortages of supplies during the Civil War. An Alabama soldier summed it up, “Sometimes I get enough and sometimes I don’t.”
In the Fall of 1863 one Rebel wrote, “We did not get into camp til after dark…and our wagons did not come up and most of us were left without anything to eat next morning.” A colonel with the 24th South Carolina reported his troops subsisted on three biscuits a day.
Rest assured you won’t go hungry if you’re a member of today’s Company D, 7th Tennessee! Check out our meal prep and meals below!
